What children will learn
- Grow vocabulary with words that are useful in writing
- Use a dictionary to find meanings, word types and examples
- Use new words correctly in speaking and writing
You'll need
- A dictionary or thesaurus (print or online)
- Sticky notes or a small whiteboard
- A pencil
How to do it
- Each morning, a different family member chooses a word — try words like 'reluctant', 'enormous', 'curious' or 'drowsy'.
- Look it up together. Write the word, its meaning and an example sentence on a sticky note and put it on the fridge.
- During the day, everyone tries to use the word naturally in conversation. Each correct use earns a point.
- At dinner, the chooser asks a quick question: 'Can you think of a synonym? An opposite?'
- Keep the sticky notes in a growing 'word wall' and review them at the end of each week.
Make it easier
Choose descriptive words linked to everyday things (such as 'gigantic', 'soggy', 'sparkling') and act them out.
Make it harder
Research the word's origin, or use the week's words in a short story or paragraph.
Parent tip: Model using the word yourself in silly ways — children love catching adults out, and they'll be listening for it all day.
Fantastic work! Every little step helps you grow.
