What children will learn
- Use imagination to build a story
- Speak in full sentences
- Use story words like ‘first’, ‘then’, ‘finally’
You'll need
- One die
- This page printed or read from the screen
- Paper (for writing the story, optional)
How to do it
- Roll once for a character: 1 a brave kangaroo, 2 a tiny dragon, 3 a pirate grandma, 4 a talking kiwi, 5 a robot chef, 6 you!
- Roll for a place: 1 the beach, 2 a spaceship, 3 a secret garden, 4 a busy city, 5 under the sea, 6 a snowy mountain.
- Roll for a problem: 1 a lost map, 2 a storm is coming, 3 a missing friend, 4 a locked door, 5 a giant sneeze, 6 everything turns purple.
- Tell the story out loud using ‘First… then… finally…’. Older children can write it down.
- Swap roles: the storyteller rolls for the next person.
Make it easier
Tell the story together, each person adding one sentence.
Make it harder
Write it with paragraphs, include dialogue, and use at least three describing words.
Parent tip: Car trips and waiting rooms are great for this — no writing needed.
Fantastic work! Every little step helps you grow.
