What children will learn

  • Structure a story with a beginning, middle and end
  • Write dialogue using speech bubbles
  • Show feelings through pictures and words

You'll need

  • This page printed, or paper folded into six boxes
  • Pencils and colouring pencils

How to do it

  1. Brainstorm a hero, a setting and a problem (a lost dog, a missing birthday cake, a robot that won't stop dancing).
  2. Plan the six panels: 1–2 introduce the hero, 3–4 show the problem getting worse, 5–6 solve it.
  3. Sketch lightly in pencil first, leaving room for speech bubbles.
  4. Add dialogue and sound effects (BOOM! Splash!). Keep each bubble short.
  5. Colour it in, add a title, then read it aloud to the family.

Make it easier

Make it three panels: beginning, problem, solution.

Make it harder

Add a twist ending or tell the story from the villain's point of view.

Parent tip: Stick figures are perfect. The writing and story structure matter more than the drawing.
