What children will learn
- Organise a tidy, ready-to-use study space and school gear
- Set two or three achievable goals for the new term
- Practise routines to make the first days of school feel familiar
You'll need
- This page printed
- School bag, uniform and stationery
- A pen
- Sticky notes (optional)
How to do it
- Set up your desk or study spot: clear it, check the lighting and put pencils, a ruler, an eraser and paper within reach.
- Do a gear check: try on your uniform and shoes, label everything, stock your pencil case and find your drink bottle and lunchbox.
- Write two or three goals for the term, such as 'Ask a question in class each day' or 'Read for 15 minutes every night'. Stick them above your desk.
- About a week before school starts, move bedtime and wake-up time a little earlier each day. Then do a practice morning: get up, dressed, breakfast and bag packed by the time you'd need to leave.
- Talk about the term ahead. Write down one thing you're excited about and one worry, plus a plan for the worry — like who you could ask for help.
Make it easier
Focus on packing your bag and choosing one goal, with an adult helping to read the checklist.
Make it harder
Make a weekly homework plan around your activities, and set a SMART goal for a subject you'd like to improve in.
Parent tip: Starting the routine a few days early means the first morning back feels familiar instead of rushed — and a calm start builds confidence.
