What children will learn
- Measure using cups, half cups and quarter cups
- Halve and double quantities
- Follow a sequence of instructions
You'll need
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- Measuring cups and spoons
- A frying pan and spatula
Safety first
- An adult must supervise all stove use; younger children should not use the stove.
- Check for egg, milk or wheat allergies before cooking.
- Turn pan handles inward so they can't be knocked.
How to do it
- Read the recipe together: 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk, 1 egg makes about 8 small pancakes.
- Ask: ‘How much of each would we need for 4 pancakes? For 16?’ Write down the new amounts.
- Measure the halved (or doubled) recipe — use the ½ and ¼ cup measures to check.
- Whisk until smooth. An adult cooks the pancakes, or supervises an older child closely at the stove.
- While they cool, cut a pancake into halves, quarters and eighths and compare the pieces.
Make it easier
Focus on halves and quarters only, and let the adult do all the measuring of liquids.
Make it harder
Scale the recipe for 6 people (1½ times) or convert cups to millilitres (1 cup = 250 mL).
Parent tip: Let your child be ‘head chef’ for the maths and you be ‘head of safety’ for the stove.
Fantastic work! Every little step helps you grow.
