What children will learn
- Research costs and timetables
- Build a budget with a contingency
- Plan a schedule and present a persuasive case
You'll need
- Internet access with a parent's permission
- Paper or a spreadsheet
- A calculator
Safety first
- Check opening times and prices on official websites, as they can change.
How to do it
- Agree on a budget and a date with your parent or carer.
- Research two or three options (a beach and picnic, a museum, a bush walk). Many libraries, museums and parks are free.
- For your favourite, list every cost: transport, entry, food, extras. Add 10% for surprises.
- Write a timetable: departure, travel time, activities, meals, return.
- Present your plan in five minutes. Explain why it's good value and how it suits everyone in the family.
Make it easier
Plan a half-day at a local park with a $20 picnic budget.
Make it harder
Compare public transport with driving (fuel and parking) and choose the cheaper option.
Parent tip: Give them real responsibility on the day — navigator or timekeeper — so the planning pays off.
Fantastic work! Every little step helps you grow.
