What children will learn

  • Observe and record data over time
  • Learn cloud and weather vocabulary
  • Compare observations with a forecast

You'll need

  • This page printed
  • A clear jar and a ruler (for a rain gauge)
  • A pencil

Safety first

  • Don't look directly at the sun.
  • Stay inside during thunderstorms.

How to do it

  1. Make a rain gauge: place a straight-sided clear jar outside, away from roofs and trees.
  2. At the same time each day, record the sky (sunny, cloudy, overcast), temperature feel, wind and any rainfall in millimetres.
  3. Check the official forecast (the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia or MetService in New Zealand) and note whether it matched.
  4. At the end of the week, look for patterns. Which day was wettest? Was the forecast usually right?

Make it easier

Draw a weather picture each day instead of writing.

Make it harder

Make a bar graph of rainfall and research the names of the clouds you saw.

Parent tip: A consistent time each day (say, after breakfast) turns this into a lovely holiday routine.
