What children will learn
- Observe living things closely
- Sort by features such as colour, shape and texture
- Learn to respect and care for nature
You'll need
- This page printed
- A pencil
- A magnifying glass (optional)
Safety first
- Adult supervision required near water and roads.
- Don't touch spiders, ants' nests, fungi or unknown plants; in Australia some spiders and plants can be harmful.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen, and wash hands afterwards.
How to do it
- Take the checklist outside and find as many items as you can.
- Tick each item when you find it and sketch your favourite in the box.
- Look, don't take: leave leaves on trees and minibeasts where they live.
- Back inside, talk about what surprised you most.
Make it easier
Focus on colours: find something red, yellow, green, brown and white.
Make it harder
Identify three plants or birds by name using a field guide or the library.
Parent tip: Slow down — sitting still for two minutes reveals far more wildlife than walking quickly.
