What children will learn
- Recall multiplication facts up to 6 × 6
- Recognise which products are common or rare
You'll need
- Two dice
- This page printed, or a hand-drawn 3 × 4 grid for each player
- Two pencils
How to do it
- Each player writes any 12 different numbers from the list of possible products (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18, 20, 24, 25, 30, 36) into their grid.
- Take turns rolling both dice and multiplying the numbers together.
- If the answer is on your grid, cross it off. Say the fact out loud: ‘4 times 5 is 20’.
- The first player to cross off a whole row wins the round. Play best of three.
- Afterwards, talk about why 36 was hard to get but 6 or 12 came up often.
Make it easier
Add the dice instead of multiplying.
Make it harder
Use a 10-sided die or multiply the total by 2 before checking your board.
Parent tip: Choosing which numbers to write is part of the learning — children soon discover some products are much more likely.
